THE OPPORTUNITY

Reporting to the Manager, Learning, Well-Being and Engagement the Occupational Health Nurse (OHN) supports the departmental and organizational strategic priorities and initiatives and actively participates in ensuring compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations.  The OHN is responsible for the delivery of Occupational Health & Wellness Services and programs which include needs monitoring, assessment and implementation of Occupational Health Programs including directives, protocols and practices. 

The OHN support employees, physicians and the organization through; attendance assistance and monitoring, new hire health assessments, health surveillance, first aid, immunization testing and surveillance, flu clinics, N95 respirator fit testing, counselling, and critical incident debriefing.   The OHN, in conjunction with the Safety and Wellness Officer, assists with the development, education, marketing, promotion and maintenance of pro-active wellness initiatives and educational programs on a variety of health, safety and wellness topics through regular in-service sessions.

 

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide primary care for occupational and non-occupational injuries and illnesses, including effective nursing assessment skills, preparation of care plan, treatment, referral and preparation of Return-to-Work Plan, as indicated.
  • Provides case management of short-term disability (STD), and long-term disability (LTD).
  • Provides effective disability case management, fitness to work, return to work assessments, reporting and development of modified work plans as appropriate.
  • Participate in workers’ health maintenance programs through various activities, e.g., pre-placement and periodic assessments, immunizations.
  • Make referrals to internal resources (such as EFAP provider, Occupational Health Physician, Physiotherapy, Ergonomic and other consultants) and provide information on external partners.
  • Work with internal/external partners in the development, and promotion of wellness initiatives and educational programs to support the needs of the workplace.
  • Provide support to Unit Managers and HR regarding the employee absences and the Attendance Awareness Program.
  • Collaborates with union partners to support employees through injury or illness, ensuring a fair and effective return to work and the development of modified work plans that meet both organisational and employee needs.
  • Identify and integrate preventative measures to promote health and control hazards specific to the health care setting including biological, physical, chemical, ergonomics and psychological.
  • Conduct research, develop, design and launch educational and wellness initiates in large settings to multiple stakeholders.
  • Prepare and facilitate seasonal campaigns in support of GBGH policy and employee well-being.
  • Monitor employee compliance with OHA and GBGH policy as it relates to Occupational Health e.g. health interviews, and immunization status.
  • Liaison with departmental managers in support of Occupational Health campaigns and blitz programs.
  • Update GBGH Occupational Health policies.
  • Maintain, respect and protect confidentiality of medical information in accordance with legislation and GBGH policy.
  • In consultation, provide education, information to managers and staff regarding OHS processes related to STD and LTD processes.
  • Participates in patient safety initiatives and takes action to address unsafe conditions and procedures to ensure a healthy and safe environment.
  • In consultation, prepare outgoing and review incoming correspondence, objection letters for disputed work-related claims ensuring accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Generate reports and statistical information, analyse trends and present finding and/or recommendations.
  • Promotes an environment that encourages and supports change using change management theory.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

The ideal candidate will possess the following key competencies, record of experience and academic preparation:

  • Current Certificate of Registration and member in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Nurse
  • Certificate in Occupational Health Nursing and/or a related certificate preferred, or currently enrolled in programs to obtain a Certificate Occupational Health Nursing Association (COHN)
  • Minimum 5 years front line nursing experience in acute, unionized healthcare setting
  • Experience in supporting employees through their employment lifecycle as it relates to their health and well – being e.g. pre-placement health assessment, orientation, education, monitoring and surveillance
  • Current Standard First Aid Certificate & demonstrated ability to respond appropriately to medical emergencies
  • Experience in case management related to attendance, short- and long-term disability is essential
  • Demonstrated expertise, knowledge and understanding of infectious diseases and their prevention
  • Motivated and self-directed individual with the ability to function effectively both autonomously and as a team member
  • Strong working knowledge of relevant of the OHSA & Health Care Regulations, Public Hospitals Act; WSIA & Regulations, WHMIS, Occupational Health Principles and Practices, Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, Case Management and OHRC duty to accommodate principles
  • Proven experience and ability to launch wellness and educational initiatives
  • Sound judgment and decision-making skills
  • Excellent communication (oral, written, and presentation) and interpersonal skills
  • Strong organizational, time management skills and problem-solving skills; able to set and adjust priorities
  • Proficient in MS Office and Parklane
  • Member of Ontario Occupational Health Nurses Association (OOHNA) is considered an asset
  • Demonstrated consistent punctuality and attendance record, maintaining a high level of reliability and commitment to performing duties with efficiency and effectiveness in previous roles.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with a collaborative and customer-focused approach.
  • Commitment to GBGH Values and Purpose Statement.
  • As a partially designated French speaking organization, French verbal and written communication skills are considered an asset in this position.
